Founded in 1999 by Anshu Gupta, Goonj NGO is a non-profit organization based in New Delhi, India. Known for addressing essential needs such as clothing and sanitation, Goonj uses underutilized urban materials to uplift rural communities, especially those impacted by poverty and natural disasters. By engaging with rural and urban communities alike, Goonj has created a bridge that helps support and empower under-resourced areas.

Goonj’s Mission and Core Values

Goonj’s mission is to bring dignity and equality to the underserved communities of India. The organization believes in empowering individuals to become active stakeholders in their communities rather than just beneficiaries of charity. Goonj emphasizes the importance of community-driven development and views clothing as a basic human right often overlooked.

The Story Behind Goonj’s Foundation

Anshu Gupta, often referred to as India’s “Clothing Man,” established Goonj after a moving encounter with a man named Habib, who had a profound impact on him. Seeing the stark realities faced by those who struggle for basic necessities, Anshu Gupta realized the unaddressed importance of clothing in human dignity. This experience led to the foundation of Goonj, which means “echo” in Hindi, symbolizing the NGO’s vision to amplify the needs and voices of underserved communities across the nation.

Goonj's Impact Across India

Operating in over 23 states across India, Goonj has significantly impacted the lives of rural and underprivileged communities. Every year, the organization recycles and redistributes over 6 million kilograms of materials, including clothes, school supplies, and household goods. Through campaigns like Daan Utsav and partnerships with corporations, Goonj has mobilized resources and volunteers across urban and rural India.
